Simple steps to make your staging day smooth, efficient, and stress-free.
Preparing your home for sale can feel like a big task — but with the right plan, it’s completely manageable. A little preparation before staging day helps everything go smoothly and ensures your home makes a powerful first impression with buyers.
HD Home Staging & Design wants you to feel confident and relaxed throughout the process. Here’s what you can do to get your home ready before we stage:
1. Declutter and Depersonalize
Buyers need to imagine themselves living in the home — not the current owners. Removing personal items and excess clutter is the single most important step in preparing for staging.
Take down family photos, collections, and anything that distracts from the home’s features. Clear surfaces and minimize accessories for a clean, open feel. If you’re still living in the home, start pre-packing now — books, seasonal clothing, and décor you won’t need in the next month can go into storage.
2. Smart Storage Solutions
You don’t have to part with your belongings — just store them temporarily to make your home feel spacious and organized. Here are a few smart options:
-
Garage: Stack boxes neatly along one wall if space allows.
-
Basement or attic: Store bins out of sight, keeping pathways clear.
-
Closets: Use baskets or clear containers to maintain a tidy appearance.
-
Storage unit: Ideal for large furniture or bulky décor.
-
Friends or family: Borrow a bit of storage space for smaller items.
We’ll guide you on what should stay, what can be stored, and what will best support your home’s presentation.
3. Deep Clean Everything
Once clutter is out of the way, give your home a top-to-bottom clean. Dust, vacuum, wash windows, wipe baseboards, and make surfaces shine. Clean homes photograph beautifully and immediately signal to buyers that the property is well cared for.
4. Complete Small Repairs
Fix squeaky hinges, loose hardware, chipped paint, and burned-out bulbs. These small details make a big difference — they prevent buyers from mentally “subtracting” value during showings.
5. Manage Pets and Their Belongings
We adore pets, but not every buyer will. Remove food bowls, litter boxes, beds, and toys before staging and showings. On staging day, please arrange for pets to be out of the home — it keeps them comfortable and allows our team to work efficiently.
6. Plan to Be Away During Staging
We kindly ask that homeowners (and pets) not be home during staging. This allows our team to move furniture and style the home without interruption. We’ll coordinate access and timing with you or your realtor so you can return to a fully transformed space.
7. Relax — You’ve Done Your Part
Once your home is decluttered, clean, and ready, we take it from there. Our team brings in thoughtfully selected furnishings and décor that highlight your home’s best features and create a warm, welcoming atmosphere buyers will love.
The result: a home that photographs beautifully, feels inviting, and inspires confident offers.
